2004 Citizen of the Year
Hon. Drew David Abbeville, Louisiana Chief of Police Drew David is the son of Herschel and Cindy David. He and his family moved to Abbeville in 1984 where he attended and graduated from vermilion Catholic high School. He attended U.S.L. for criminal justice and began his career in law enforcement for the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office shortly thereafter. In 1991, Drew married his high school sweetheart Rachael Broussard and began what he still calls a God sent union, which has blessed them with three beautiful children: Ryan, Jacob and Sarah. Once he and his wife began their family he felt a strong desire to deepen his faith life and branch out and assist with the youth. He became the Director of Religious Education for St. Mary Magdalen as well as the youth director and the Rite to Christian Initiation director. He also began coaching and getting involved in youth sports in Abbeville. During his time at the Sheriff's Office his career consisted of numerous duties from correction and patrol officer to undercover narcotics work and general investigations as a detective. Drew says that he realizes all of these jobs trained him well in his career but the one he is still most fond of is his four years as a D.A.R.E. instructor for the parish's fifth graders. it is here where he says he learned the true innocence of our youth and just how important they are to our community and lives. "I feel God has blessed my life so much, and for that I will use any gift He may give me to bring the honor back to him." Drew feels one of these gifts is the ability to serve the people of Abbeville as their Chief of Police. "This is an extremely important and faith filled task which I must admit has its times of trials. That is when I truly believe that all He has taken me through and also given me such as faith, family and friends helps to be that guide and strength. Abbeville is an awesome place to live. I can remember at the end of our senior year of high school so many friends having the desire to go off and just 'Get out of Abbeville' and thinking to myself why? Everything we know, love and cherish is right here. You know what's funny... today, nearly twenty years later many of these same people are sitting right next to me at baseball games, community events, and other activities right here in Good Old Abbeville. What a great city to live in and serve."
