Emma Granger 2003 Junior Cattleman of the Year
Emma Granger has been named Jr. Cattleman for the 2003 Louisiana Cattle Festival. Emma is 15 years old and a sophomore at Kaplan High School. She has been active in the 4-H Beef Project for six years, rasing and showing Braford Cattle. Her beef cattle experience started early. She has been getting in the pasture and catch pen with her familys herd since she was seven years old. Her job responsibilities with the herd include sorting cattle, worming, vaccinating, assisting with castrations and feeding cattle in the winter. She even assisted in the birth of a calf when her show cow was having a difficult delivery and nursed an orphan calf one summer. Her accomplishments during her 4-H career have been outstanding. She has demonstrated her considerable abilities in exhibiting cattle by winner her age division three years in parish beef showmanship competitions and twice winning her age division at the State Braford Showmanship Contest. The quality of the care she offers her animals is evidence by the championships her calves have garnered including Reserve Champion Louisiana Bred Braford Female at the LSU State Show, Reserve Champion Braford Female, Champion Angus Bull and Reserve Champion Vermilion Bred Braford Female in parish competition. Winner Premier Beef Exhibitor honors twice, and her age division in beef Achievement Records twice have rewarded her overall knowledge and quality of work. Her involvement in 4-H includes much more than her beef experiences. She has also been involved in Sheep, Swine, Foods and Nutrition, Health, and Citizenship projects. She was named Outstanding Club Member for the past six years and garnered the Overall Outstanding Girl Award in 2001. Emma was State Winner in Junior Achievement Records and has multiple wins in cookery, photography, and craft exhibits as well as in demonstration competitions. She has been a member of the 4-H Junior Leader Club for the past two years. She attended 4-H State Short Course Competition for the past two years placing 5th with an Agriculture Demonstration on calf care and 2nd in Livestock Judging. Emma is also heavily involved in Beta Club and Athletics. She is a six year member of the Beta Club and has won the State Public Speaking Contest and represented her club at the National Beta Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was a four sport letter winner as a freshman at Kapln High School, playing significant roles on the basketball and softball teams and running track and cross country. She was a member of the district runner-up 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams and was All-District in cross country. She has been an all star softball player on two babe Ruth Regional Championship teams and a member of the 12 and under team that was second at the 2001 World Series. Emmas 4-H leader is Nancy Marceaux. She is the daughter of Andrew and Fran Granger. It can be said that Emma Granger is a well-rounded young lady who has excelled in all of her endeavors. She is most deserving of the honor of Junior Cattleman of the 2003 Louisiana Cattle Festival. |
