Gerald Hebert

2009 LA Cattle Festival Grand Marshal

Gerald Hebert grew up in Abbeville following the end of World War II and managed to leave his mark on everything he attempted. He carried on with the spirit of winning as he left his hometown and began making his way through life.

Hebert graduated from Abbeville High School with the class of 1962. Before he left, he lettered in football, baseball and basketball. Two of those years were listed as an all-state player. He continued with baseball for two years at USL and went on to play professional baseball from 1967-1973 with the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers organizations.
Married to Claudy Dell Hebert, he has a daughter, Michelle Marie Hebert, and a stepson, Tony Louviere.

Following his playing days, he used his degree in education to teach and coach Scott Middle School through six undefeated seasons during the seven years he was on campus. At that time, the school also won seven consecutive track championships.
Returning to USL, he coached the freshman baseball team to a 22-0 for the 1972 and 1973 season. Following this, he continued his roll in coaching baseball, leading his teams to eight consecutive American Legion District championships of which four were state finalists.

He then went on to work with the City of Lafayette as the athletic director and then youth marketing manager for Coca-Cola of Lafayette, where he was also the event coordinator and worked in public relations.

Hebert is also responsible for the Liberty Card as a school fund-raiser. Beginning in 1995, the program has now gone on to raise more than $1.2 million for Acadiana area schools. He has also been responsible for bringing the Top 28 basketball finals to Lafayette and has hosted numerous wrestling championships, softball championships all-star baseball games and the National AAU Girls 14-year-old basketball tournament to Lafayette.

Currently, Hebert is the athletic development coordinator at UL Lafayette.

Much of the drive Hebert has shown through the years comes from the example set by his father, Oneil “Parker” Hebert. His father was mayor pro-tem on the Abbeville City Council and was extremely active in promoting Vermilion Parish.

In Abbeville, Hebert is responsible for leading the renovation of Roy Theriot Field and also donated monies for other field improvements at A.A. Comeaux Park. He also worked to help bring the Louisiana High School All-Star Baseball games to Abbeville and was the promoter that brought the Temptations musical group in concert to Abbeville to benefit youth baseball several years ago.

Previously, Hebert has been honored with the City of Abbeville Outstanding Service Award in 1990; Lafayette City Parish Council Distinguished Citizen Award in 1998; LHSAA Distinguished Service Award in 2000 and the LHSAA Super Sport Award in 1997 and again in 2006.
