James R. LeLeux, Sr.
2010 LA Cattle Festival Cattleman of the Year

James R. LeLeux Sr. of Abbeville is the 2010 Cattle Festival Cattleman of the Year. James is a fourth generation cattle producer who owns and manages his own cattle operation with his wife Glenda.

From birth, cattle have been an integral part of James’ life. He grew up on a farm that grew rice and raised cattle.

During high school, he was an active member of the Future Farmers of America. After graduating from Abbeville High School in 1970, he trained as a diesel mechanic at Gulf Area Vocational Technical School.

He entered the oilfield and worked for Unocal beginning as a mechanic. During this time, he worked cattle part-time assisting his father, Warren LeLeux, who was herd manager for Fairview Farms. He assisted his father with his own personal herd as well as many friends and neighbors with their own herds and participated as a member of the Vermilion Parish Cattlemen’s Association.

In 1996, he began his own herd and became a cow-calf producer of commercial Beefmaster cattle. After 25 years at Unocal, he retired as a maintenance foreman in 2003 and took on cattle ranching as a full-time activity. He began a more active role in promoting beef production and education. He was appointed to the board of the Vermilion Parish Cattlemen’s Association in 2005 and served as president of the association from 2007-2008. The Louisiana Cattlemen’s Association recognized James as Outstanding Parish President for both 2007 and 2008.

James further advances cattle knowledge and education by participating in many programs and boards. He presently works part-time for the LSU Research Station in Jeanerette. He serves on the Beef Advisory Panel and is a member of the NCBA and BBU. He is a graduate of the LSU Master Cattleman Program (2004) and the LSU Master Horseman Program (2006). Because horsemanship is included in his interests, he is a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and is a member of the Louisiana Equine Council.

When hurricane Rita dealt a significant blow to the Vermilion Parish cattle industry, many of the Vermilion Parish Cattlemen’s Association members, including James, arranged for housing and feeding of the many wayward cattle. Thanks to their efforts, most of the surviving cattle were eventually returned to the proper owners. He also coordinated with government officials in getting proper relief to the storm soaked parish.

Recognizing the necessity of passing interest in agriculture and livestock on to future generations, he helps in the ring for 4-H livestock shows and lends a hand with the 4-H horse camp. His own grandchildren, though young, are taking an interest in cattle production and farm life. He is always there to encourage young people to take an active role in determining how and where the food is produced.

James has been married to Glenda Veazey of Abbeville for 39 years. They have two sons, James, Jr. and Marcus. His grandchildren Mara and Zachary are his constant companions while inspecting herds, feeding or mending fences.

It is with great appreciation that the Louisiana Cattle Festival recognizes James R. LeLeux, Sr.’s accomplishments and contributions to the cattle industry by naming him the 2010 Cattleman of the Year.
