Sara Granger 2003 Scholarship Winner Sara Granger is the Louisiana Cattle Festival Scholarship Winner for 2003. She is the 17 year old daughter of Fran and Andrew Granger and has one sister, Emma. She is a senior at Kaplan High School. Sara lives just south of Abbeville in the "country" as her friends like to say, where she helps care for a small herd of Braford cows. She enjoys working on the family farm where she is responsible for picking up hay, worming, vaccinating and castrating calves and helping to round up and sort cattle. She also spends countless hours feeding and training her show calves. She has exhibited Braford and Brangus cattle for nine years. The awards she has garnered through showing cattle are numerous. She has had several champions at local, district and state levels including Reserve Champion Brangus Heifer in 200 at the State Show at LSU, Supreme Champion Female Over-All Breeds at the Acadiana District Show in 1999. She has placed numerous times in the parish Beef Premier Exhibitor including Reserve Premier Exhibitor in 1999. Her placings in beef showmanship have demonstrated her efforts in working with her calves as she is often bound near the top of the showmanship classes and was named Champion Junior Braford Showman at the LSU State Show in 1997. Sara has served the beef industry by promoting beef and sharing her knowledge with other beef project members. She has given talks to 4-Hers at beef clinics and livestock tours. Sara says, "I try to help them succeed in something they like to do, and I like to see them smile when they do succeed." She has given illustrated talks for the Beef Ambassador Program for the past three years and cooks for beef cookery contests. She is currently living a dream of hers by serving as the Queen of the Vermilion Cattlemens Association. She has represented the industry and the parish association in parades, TV appearances, at meetings, livestock shows and conventions. She was 2nd runner-up at the State Cattlemens Queens Contest in January.

resident of her local 4-H club, has served the parish-wide Junior Leadership Club as Community Service Chairman and is vice-President this year and has attended the state 4-H competitive event, Short Course, for the past four years. She is a two time State winner and 1st Alternate and Blue Ribbon Winner in various demonstration contests at Short Course. She has completed Foods and Nutrition, Photography, Citizenship and Personal Development projects in 4-H. She was twice named Outstanding 4-H Girl in the parish and was top ten 4-Her five times. Because of her excellent 4-H career, she was introduced into the 4-H Key Club in 2003.
Sara has lettered three years for the Kaplan High Basketball team playing forward, the track team running the two mile and the cross-country team. She has been in the Beta Club and on the speech team. She volunteers for special Olympics and the American Cancer Society. She is a well-rounded young lady who, when asked to comment on her award and her career in beef, says "I would like to thank the Louisiana Cattle Festival for honoring me for something I consider part of my life. I would never trade the experiences Ive had because they were lessons in patience, hard work and determination and they have made me a better person."
